Brigadeiro Recipe

It is not a birthday party in Brazil if there’s no brigadeiro, this dessert was created at a very unusual situation: a political campaign! In 1945 a military brigadier (brigadeiro in Portuguese) called Eduardo Gomes was running for president and a group of women decided to sell something sweet in the meetings. It was post war and milk and sugar were very hard to find which complicated things, so they decided to mix butter with chocolate and condensed milk and there it was, the Brigadeiro was born.

Since then, many adaptations of brigadeiro were created:

  • Brigadeiro de colher: brigadeiro that is not in the format of balls and you can eat with a spoon. The best option to share with your friends and loved ones.
  • Brigadeiro no copo: in this version the desert is served in little plastic glasses.
  • Brigadeiro gourmet: the typical chocolate recipe is transformed into many other flavors – coconut, nutella, churros (yes, the typical Spanish dish), dulce de leche, coffee, white chocolate and so on.

You can never go wrong with brigadeiro and this is why today I am going to teach you how to make it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of condensed milk
  • 7 tbsp of chocolate powder
  • 1 tbsp of butter
  • Chocolate sprinkles for decoration

Directions:

Add the condensed milk, the chocolate powder and the butter in a medium saucepan, cook in medium heat and stir until it thickens (approximately 10 minutes). Let it rest until it is cool enough to make the balls. Put a little bit of butter in your hands and make little balls, roll them in chocolate sprinkles for decorations. And enjoy your brigadeiro in room temperature or put it on the fridge to chill.
